His & Hers: 'Cam'

Today we gather here to review and talk about 'Cam' by Daniel Goldhaber.

Wrote by Isa Mazzei, story by Daniel Goldhaber, Isa Mazzei & Isabelle Link-Levy.

(SPOILERS AHEAD)

Her:'I don't want to be watching this movie' was my first reaction. the movie creates confusion & impact from the first scene. I didn't know exactly what I was getting into.

His: Yeah! my first reaction was a bit shocking as well. After an intense creepy start of erotic cam girls and suicide violence, you try to digest what comes next.

Her: I was hoping to watch something that was going to give me a 'Get Out' experience... it certainly did, but not in the way I was expecting.

His: yeah maybe I think my problem was that the real conflict started a bit late. Around 29 minutes after the movie started.

Her: Yes! From the first scene I wanted to 'get out' & disengage. I didn't want to keep going. I felt disgusted by the perversion tbh. I never really engaged to the character or the movie for that matter, UNTIL the inciting incident. The first twist, where the perversion stopped being the main focus & the mystery began.

His: Exactly! I know that you need to introduce the character and the world first...bla bla bla... And you get that after a montage of sex toys, webcams, chat rooms and how they give tokens for tips. BUT! when you start to watch the movie, the conflict you get is that Lola wants the first place in the models top, and that she is willing to do anything to make it. And... well, that's not so interesting... The good plot is what you called the inciting incident.

Her: There I was hooked! Watching the despair of the character & revealing her true issue -not being enough- & having someone who was achieving what she wanted but couldn't. And to top all her frustration, the person who was achieving this, was doing it with her face and she (the main character) wasn't getting the reward or satisfaction from it.

His: The good thing is when you get the real conflict. Because, when your concentration starts to divert and your patient to see more sex shows is almost over... Lola/Alice wakes up and finds that her show has been stolen for someone who looks exactly like her. Right there your attention changes.

Her: And that insecurity & lack of self esteem that had been revealed since the first moment, now made sense.

His: After that moment of conflict, you start to ingest all the horror and thriller the movie has. And it's awesome. Everything starts to feel anxious (Good anxiety). You start to crave for what is coming next.

Her: The suspense is well made, you keep going with the movie & gets you involved. It gives enough amount of information, such as the relationship with the mother & the death of this other girl, to make you get to your own conclusions of what might be going on, which adds to the suspense.

His: When you finish the movie you nod and think that at the end... it's a good movie. It's fine horror with a good message behind. It's well acted by Madeline Brewer and all.

Her: Overall it's a well executed plot. It achieves the reaction expected in the audience & it performs according to the format & genre.

His: I think its all about identity. What you are, what you want to be and what you are willing to do for it. And how you mislead that you are what people think of you. The main question is who you really are? the person your ID says, the person you show to people so you can get their attention or someone between all possibilities.
